Hungary is one of the oldest European countries, situated in the middle of the continent in Central Europe. The country is divided in two by its main waterway, the Danube. Hungary is situated in the Carpathian Basin and is bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the southwest and Austria to the west.

Hungary is one of the thirty most popular tourist destinations in the world. The country is home to the largest thermal water cave system and the second largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Hévíz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural grasslands in Europe (Hortobágy). Slightly more than one half of Hungary's landscape consists of flat to rolling plains of the Pannonian Basin in the southern and eastern part of the country.

The western part, Transdanubia, is a primarily hilly region with a terrain varied by low mountains. These include the very eastern stretch of the Alps near the Austrian border, the Transdanubian Mountains, in the central region of Transdanubia, and the Mecsek Mountains and Villány Mountains in the south. The highest mountains of the country are located in the Carpathians along the Slovakian border.

Budapest - The capital of Hungary - is the largest city in East-Central Europe and the seventh largest in the European Union. Cited as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, its extensive World Heritage Site includes the banks of the Danube, the Buda Castle Quarter, Andrássy Avenue, Heroes' Square and the Millennium Underground Railway, the fourth oldest in the world. Other highlights are a total of 80 geothermal springs, the world's largest thermal water cave system, the second largest synagogue and the third largest Parliament building.
