Xavier Bosch, Spain
Health University Barcelona Camus

Dr. F. Xavier Bosch conducts epidemiological research on cancers linked to infectious agents notably on cancer of the liver, of the cervix, of the skin, of the vagina, of the anus, of the penis and of the oral cavity. He has also carried on research studies on diet and colorectal cancer and led a program of implementation and methodological research in cancer registration.
These various research projects have been instrumental in demonstrating the causal role of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) in cervical cancer and on the opportunities for liver cancer prevention using Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) vaccines in rural Africa. Some of these studies have played a catalytic role for the initiation of the first vaccine trials for HBV and HPV and for the evaluation of HPV tests as screening tools. Dr. F. Xavier Bosch has worked in what is now called molecular epidemiology. His research work has been characterized by the integration of the latest biological assays to determine exposure to carcinogens with epidemiological field studies carried out in about 35 countries around the world, particularly in Spain, Latin America, Africa and Asia. The final goal of his research has been the application of the aetiological knowledge derived from it, to the primary prevention of cancer.
Xavier Castellsague, Spain
Catalan Institute of Oncology

Dr. Xavier Castellsagué , MD, MPH, Ph.D academic background includes a Medical degree (University of Barcelona, Catalonia, 1983), a specialization in Preventive Medicine and Public Health (Ministry of Education and Science, Spanish Government 2003), a Master of Public Health degree (Yale University, CT, USA 1987), and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Public Health (Yale University, CT, USA 1991). His doctoral thesis, “Tubal sterilization, intrauterine contraception and the risk of endometrial cancer”, examined the association between tubal ligation and IUD use on the risk of developing endometrial cancer. Between 1991 and 1992 he worked as a post- doctoral fellow at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO, Lyon, France). Since 1992 he has been a Senior Epidemiologist and Section Chief at the Unit of Infections and Cancer (Cancer Epidemiology Research Program) at the Institut Català d’Oncologia (ICO) in Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona (Catalonia).
Since 1987, Dr. Castellsagué´s main research interests focus on the descriptive and etiological epidemiology of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in ano-genital, esophageal, and oropharyngeal cancers both in men and women. He has been involved in many national and international epidemiologic studies on HPV and cancer. In the last 10 years he has been actively participating in the clinical programs of prophylactic and therapeutical vaccines against HPV and cervical cancer. He has been the principal investigator of five phase II-III clinical trials on HPV vaccination: two trials testing the quadrivalent vaccine against HPV 6/11/16/18 infections, one trial testing the bivalent vaccine against HPV 16/18 infections, and three other trials testing the new generation of polyvalent HPV vaccines. These investigations are revolutionizing current strategies for the prevention of HPV-related cancers and diseases and they may be regarded as one of the most important advances ever made on cancer prevention.
Dr. Castellsagué is currently author or co-author of 207 peer-reviewed scientific publications with impact factor, including top scientific journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. He has presented results and scientific communications at more than 400 conferences and symposiums. His most prominent contributions include the identification of the protective effects of male circumcision on the risk of penile HPV infection and of cervical cancer in men’s female partners and the risk reduction of cervical cancer linked to IUD use.
Dr. Castellsagué has taught at IARC and in postgraduate courses of different national and international programs. Currently, he is Professor of a virtual training course on cancer research methodologies included in the “e-Oncologia” project, an extensive international “e-learning” program run by the Catalan Institute of Oncology in collaboration with various teaching institutions.
Dr. Castellsagué is an editor of the “HPV Today” newsletter, a publication that is translated in 5 languages and aims at informing the medical community on the important research advances on HPV and cancer.
Dr. Castellsagué is also the Director of the ICO/IARC Information Centre on HPV and Cancer, which gathers and disseminates information on HPV and related cancers for each of the countries and regions in the World with the aim of accelerating the implementation of preventative strategies to reduce the burden of cervical cancer and other HPV-related diseases in the World.
